Day 5 of Eurotrip of our European Trip in the Summer of 2013

We decide to skip Luxembourg because Chin starts her residency the day after and I didn’t want to get into Paris too late, especially with the train issues we encountered.  We caught a Thayls Bullet train to Paris where speeds topped out at 186 miles per hour.  The countryside went woosh in just 90 minutes!

Unlike the Belgians the French know how to post maps and instructions everywhere.  We traveled from Brussels to Paris Nord.  The large train station in Paris.  When we got to the station we had no troubles finding the ticketing center to purchase subway tickets.  While trying to figure out which line to wait in for our tickets we had an attempted pickpocket crew try their luck on us. One showed some form to sign about being deaf and dumb or something and the person said sign.  While she kept pointing to the sheet two others came behind us and was waiting for us to focus on the sheet.  Chin picked up on the attempted pickpocketers while I just gave them the “go away look I don’t want to be bugged look.”  Either way we accomplished our goal of getting them to go away.   It was strange for them to target us in the first place since there were plenty of tourists that had no idea what was going on.

We purchased 5 day passes and then proceeded to get on the correct subway train!  Paris has tons of amazing old buildings.  I felt a little naïve when we got out of the subway at St. Michel.  Lots of sites, sounds and smells.  Some good and some not so good.  We checked into a Holiday Inn near St Michel.  It turns out to have been a great move on our part because our internet worked quite well.  The suggested hotel for the residency was a Novatel near the Eiffel Tower.  It didn’t look nice from the outside.  The second thing we did was go down to the post office and buy some SIM cards for our phones since we would be separated the next few days.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Their postal service sells sim cards for phones.  We walked around for a little while when we picked a random café and enjoyed happy hour there.  However, “happy hour” pricing is still very expensive.  Paris is not a cheap town.  We then had a good dinner near St. Michel and after some people watching we headed back to the hotel to do some work.  Our room was in typical Euro fashion very small but they did give us a few of the Eiffel Tower from our balcony.
